Hire a birth pool to experience the benefits of water birth in your own home.
Water birth is thought to have been successfully, and beneficially, experienced for hundreds of years from the South Pacific islands to Ancient Greece, there is also oral tradition within Maori and Central American Indian communities.
The first record of water birth in Europe is during the early 1800s in France. Since the 1960s work and research of water birth advocates and pioneers such as Igor Tjarkovsky and Michel Odent has led to more research, education and availability of water birth.
Benefits of water birth include a reduction in the incidence of perineal tears and trauma, reduction in pain and greater freedom of movement for the birthing person supported by the water.
Approximately 20% of birthing people use water as a form of pain relief in labour and water has been refered to as only second to epidural in alieviating labour pain. Studies have also shown that labouring in water can reduce labour by up to 2 hours.

5 pools are available to hire from Healthy Opportunities Perinatal and each kit hired comes with a new liner, hose and sieve, as well as all the other necessary equiptment including air pump, water pump, ground sheet, thermometer and instructions.
